Albin Planinec was a Slovenian grandmaster who played the most uncompromising attacking chess of any player on the deep Yugoslav circuit of the 1970s. He earned the grandmaster title in 1972 and spent his best years in an era when Yugoslavia had more strong players per capita than anywhere outside the Soviet Union, meaning every domestic tournament was a gauntlet. His chess was built on imagination rather than preparation: he opened 1.e4 in roughly three quarters of his games as White, but salted his repertoire with flank experiments — 1.g3 and 1.b3 together account for over a fifth of his White games — looking for positions where calculation mattered more than theory. Against the very best he was streaky rather than steady, but he held a winning lifetime score against Jan Timman and beat Miguel Najdorf in both their recorded encounters. Illness cut his competitive career short in the 1980s.
