Biografia

Michael Basman fu il grande eccentrico degli scacchi inglesi, un Maestro Internazionale abbastanza forte da battere i Grandi Maestri ma non interessato a batterli con mosse normali. Il suo repertorio era una sfilata di aperture che nessun libro rispettabile raccomandava: 1.g4 (il Grob), 1.a3, 1...a6 (la Difesa San Giorgio, immortalata quando Tony Miles la usò per battere Karpov), 1...h6, 1...g5. Scrisse libri su ciascuna di esse e sostenne seriamente che fossero giocabili. Oltre agli scacchi agonistici, l'eredità di Basman fu educativa. Fondò la UK Chess Challenge nel 1996, una competizione scolastica che ha avvicinato più di un milione di bambini agli scacchi di torneo. Continuò a giocare e insegnare fino a poco prima della sua morte nel 2022.

Move selection runs through 12 style-scoring layers trained on Michael's characteristic decisions: opening repertoire, strategic plans, causal chains between themes, and the kind of positions Michael actually steered toward in real games.

The underlying search engine is a 2630-Elo UCI engine, but its top candidate is not automatically played: the style layer picks the move most consistent with Michael's historical tendencies, constrained by safety filters that prevent blundering. The result is a personality reconstruction that plays like Michael, not just a strong engine wearing his name.
