For forty years a chess computer was an object with an identity: you knew the machine, the program and, often, the person who wrote it. CZUBATRONIC 2400 brings that machine back: a professional console with warm electronic displays, a seven-segment clock and LED move indicators. And it puts Capa, Thorsten Czub’s own chess program, inside it.

Play it. Set up positions. Replay your games. Let Capa fight Pioneer on the same board. And when Thorsten releases a new Capa, load it into the console with two clicks.

What it is

A new chess computer from an era that never quite ended

Modern engines calculate more positions per second than anyone can imagine, and they all play alike. The dedicated machines of the 1980s and 1990s did not. A Mephisto felt different from a Fidelity, a Novag from a Saitek, and their owners argued about playing style, tactics, endgames and whether the thing really understood chess.

CZUBATRONIC 2400 is deliberately an anachronism: a dedicated chess system built in 2026 that belongs to that world. Its fascia, displays and controls are those of a professional chess computer. Its heart is a program with a recognisable origin, a history and idiosyncrasies of its own.

It is a tribute to Thorsten Czub, to his engine Capa, and to the manufacturers and programmers who gave computer chess its golden age.

If you grew up with chess computers

The LED that lights up on the square, the clock, the computer-status readout that tells you the depth, nodes and evaluation while the machine thinks, and an opponent that takes a human moment before it answers. This is the machine you remember, on the screen in front of you.

If you play for the game

Eight clocks from 15 seconds a move to 40 moves in 120 minutes, takeback, hints, analysis, position setup, PGN open and save, replay with Play From Here. Three engines are bundled; any UCI engine can be added.

If you love computer-chess history

The full Thorsten Czub interview and the story of Capa are built into the console. The engine you play against was written by someone who was in the room in Cologne in 1986, and who is still testing today.

Play

Sit down at the console

Choose a side, a clock and the engine control, and play. The computer-status display names the opening from an ECO database, shows the engine’s depth, nodes, speed and evaluation, and tells you whether the move came from the book.

Capa does not answer in a quarter of a second. In a game against you it takes a human-feeling thinking time: fast for book moves, forced moves and recaptures, longer in a complicated middlegame, now and then a long think, always within its clock. Press MOVE NOW if you are in a hurry.

  • Eight time controls, from 15 and 30 seconds a move to 3+2, 5, 15 and 30 minutes and 40 moves in 120 minutes
  • Takeback, hint, analyse, resign, board flip, LED or full-square move indicators
  • Move history in algebraic notation; every move is clickable for replay

Engines

Capa, Pioneer, Tacticon, or any UCI engine

Capa is the standard engine: Thorsten Czub’s program, begun on a Sinclair Spectrum, carried through Amstrad, Atari and PC, and brought back to life in 2026 as a modern UCI engine that still keeps its twelve levels, its permanent brain and its commentary.

Pioneer, the engine of Pioneer 2 Chess, comes with a calibrated ladder from Novice to Grandmaster. Tacticon is bundled as a third opponent. Any other UCI engine can be validated and selected, and remembered as your standard engine for the next start.

Non-Pioneer engines are driven by explicit controls: fixed depth, seconds per move, or the game clock.

Engine match: pick two engines, one condition, and watch them play on the console with both engines’ live output side by side.

Study

Set up any position. Replay any game.

The setup palette puts pieces on the board, chooses the side to move and which side you play, the engine control and the clock, then START PLAYING THIS POSITION. Positions are validated, and the engine moves at once if the first move is its own.

Games are saved as standard PGN with the starting position preserved. Open any PGN, click through the move list, step with PREV and NEXT or the arrow keys, and continue from any move with PLAY FROM HERE. ANALYZE asks the engine for its verdict without touching the game.

Appearance

Four schemes, four piece sets

Walnut is the original: the warm finish of a dedicated machine. Blue, Green and Graphite turn the same console into an electronic instrument, a hardware-green panel or dark ABS plastic with amber displays. Pieces come as the current CZUBATRONIC set, the original 2D production set, and two wooden Staunton sets. The window sizes itself to its content and stays readable at any display scaling.

The story

Thorsten Czub and a life in computer chess

The CZUBATRONIC 2400 is named in honour of Thorsten Czub, whose involvement in computer chess reaches back to the first generations of dedicated machines. He has seen the subject from almost every angle: as a player and collector, a tester and writer, a participant at computer-chess events, a consultant and, eventually, the author of his own chess program.

A black-and-red machine that could not spot an illegal move

It started in a friend’s living room with one of the very first chess computers: a small black-and-red device with an LED display that the two young club players watched spellbound, and then discovered did not check whether their moves were legal. A Chess Champion Delta 1 followed, and an angry letter to Novag about its playing strength that he still has. Then Mephisto II, IIb and III, MM2, Rebel, MM4, MM5, the RISC machines: at one stage around fifteen chess computers, and test reports for a computer magazine.

Cologne 1986

At the World Computer Chess Championship in Cologne, twenty years old, he helped record the games and produce the bulletin, with an Atari but also with paper, scissors, glue and a photocopier, surrounded by Hans Berliner, Helmut Pfleger, Vlastimil Hort, Ed Schröder and Jan Louwman, listening to Thomas Nitsche explain Mephisto III while Richard Lang waited in the wings. Later he sat beside David Levy discussing Chris Whittington’s Chess System Tal, on which he worked as a consultant.

“The programmer mattered. Richard Lang meant something. Dan and Kathe Spracklen meant something. Their programs were not simply interchangeable executables.”Thorsten Czub, from the interview built into the console

Capa

His own program grew alongside the computers he owned: a Sinclair ZX Spectrum with a rubber keyboard, an Amstrad CPC 464 bought in an English supermarket, an Atari ST with a 20 MB hard disk that sounded like Concorde taking off, and finally the PC. He learned from the openly published programs of the time (Sargon, Schrüfer and Kraas, Nimzo, Crafty, Gerbil, TSCP) and named the result after Capablanca, the champion who lost so remarkably few games.

Capa was never meant to be the strongest program in the world. It was a laboratory, and it had character: twelve levels, permanent brain, position setup, and comments of its own that were not always polite (“Since when can humans play chess?”). Then it slept for years.

In 2026 development resumed. The PowerBASIC DOS program was moved to FreeBASIC for Windows and given hash tables, an opening book, a UCI interface, modern move ordering, null-move pruning, late-move reductions, game phases and endgame knowledge, without erasing the old Capa. The menu, the twelve levels, the permanent brain and the commentary survive. That is why Capa is the engine inside this machine.

The latest Capa builds

Thorsten Czub keeps developing Capa. New builds he releases are published here as standalone UCI engines you can load into CZUBATRONIC 2400 (or any UCI chess interface) without waiting for the next release of the console. The console itself always ships with a Capa build as its standard engine.

The first separately downloadable Capa build will appear here as soon as Thorsten Czub releases it. Until then, the console’s bundled Capa (Capa (CAPA96)) is the current one.
Loading a newer Capa into CZUBATRONIC 2400
  1. Unpack the build anywhere on your PC.
  2. In the console, click ENGINEBROWSE UCI ENGINE and pick the new .exe. It is validated with a UCI handshake before it is used.
  3. Tick Set as standard engine and the console starts with it from now on. RESET STANDARD ENGINE TO CAPA96 takes you back to the bundled one.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is CZUBATRONIC 2400 free?

Yes. CZUBATRONIC 2400 is free for personal, non-commercial use under its beta license. There is no account, no subscription and no advertising. It is funded by supporters.

Which Windows versions does CZUBATRONIC 2400 run on?

Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit. The download contains everything: the program, the Capa, Pioneer and Tacticon engines, the artwork and fonts. Nothing else needs to be installed.

Do I need administrator rights to install it?

No. The installer puts the program into your own user profile. The portable edition needs no installation at all: unpack the ZIP into any folder or onto a USB stick and start CZUBATRONIC.exe; its settings stay in a config folder beside the program.

Which chess engines are included, and can I use my own?

Three engines are bundled: Capa, Thorsten Czub’s own program, as the standard engine; Pioneer with a calibrated ladder from Novice to Grandmaster; and Tacticon. Any other UCI engine can be added with ENGINEBROWSE UCI ENGINE, validated with a UCI handshake, and remembered as your standard engine.

What is Capa?

Capa is the chess program Thorsten Czub began in the 1980s on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum and carried through the Amstrad CPC, the Atari ST and the PC. Named after Capablanca, it was his laboratory rather than a contender for the strongest engine, and it had twelve levels, permanent brain and its own commentary. In 2026 development resumed: Capa became a modern UCI engine with hash tables, an opening book and modern search techniques while keeping its original features. New builds are published on this page.

How strong is CZUBATRONIC 2400?

It is deliberately not a modern top engine. Pioneer’s calibrated levels range from Novice (about 1170 Elo) to Grandmaster (about 2450 Elo). Capa and Tacticon are driven by explicit controls: fixed depth, seconds per move or the game clock. The point is a dedicated chess computer with an identity, not the highest rating.

Does CZUBATRONIC 2400 work offline?

Yes, completely. Nothing is sent anywhere. Games are saved as PGN files wherever you choose; settings and a diagnostic log live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\CZUBATRONIC for the installed edition or in the config folder beside the program for the portable edition.

Windows SmartScreen shows a warning. Is the download safe?

The program is not code-signed yet, so Windows shows its standard warning for unsigned downloads. Choose More info and then Run anyway. The SHA-256 checksums of the official installer and portable ZIP are listed on this page so you can verify what you downloaded.

How is CZUBATRONIC 2400 related to PlayChessGate and Pioneer 2 Chess?

All three come from DCS Analytics. PlayChessGate lets you play the chess legends online, Pioneer 2 Chess is the talking Soviet chess computer, and CZUBATRONIC 2400 is the dedicated chess computer for your Windows desktop, with the Pioneer engine shared between them.
